Until the latest concrete recycling technology was put into widespread use, removal was a problem when a building was demolished or a road or walkway was broken up. What to do with the material presented a challenge. It would be hauled away and dumped into a landfill most of the time. Because of its weight and volume, this was a very costly process requiring many trucks generally travelling long distances. No one really wanted it dumped in their area.
Today facilities will crush the large sections into smaller pieces to be utilized for many different projects. Even sections with steel rebar are accepted. These large pieces are crushed and then sorted by size for different uses. Larger pieces may be crushed again if need be. The resulting products are then screened for contaminants. Crushers are often brought right to the demolition site to allow for easier transportation. The crushed concrete can then be used for a variety of projects including:
- Highway beds. Concrete recycling produces aggregates are used as beds beneath roadways.
- Retaining walls. Larger pieces, like rip rap, can be used to control erosion along lakes, retention ponds, property slopes and hillsides.
- Sound barriers and large retaining walls. Put into wire cages called gabions, these can be stacked to provide privacy and block sound from a highway. They can also be used for larger retaining walls.
- New concrete. Clean, uncontaminated aggregate can be used as the dry material in fresh mixtures.
These are just a few of the uses of concrete recycling. Now let’s look at the many eco-friendly benefits.
- Save landfill space. Concrete and other construction and demolition debris in landfills has been reduced by 50 percent.
- Less gravel mining. Reusing this material cuts the need for mining gravel greatly.
- Saves water. One ton of cement reused saves 1360 gallons of freshwater.
- Less pollution. Reduction in truck transportation reduces pollution and highway wear.
There is one more benefit to concrete recycling and this one directly affects you as the demolition customer. Recycling returns money to your pocket from the cost of the demolition project. This and other resources from your project can aid in the recovery of a portion of the expense incurred with tearing down or dismantling your structure.
