When it comes to asset recovery and recycling most of our customers, at the onset, do not realize the potential to save money on their demolition projects. We will quickly make them aware of the potential. Most buildings, commercial, industrial and others, contain materials, and often equipment, that can be recycled, repurposed or reused.
The secondary market for recycled building products alone is very large as is the scrap market, especially for non-ferrous metals such as copper, brass and aluminum. Almost all structures contain substantial amounts of these products. These markets, along with the high cost of disposal that has been implemented to encourage recycling, have made green demolition, or even dismantling, the most cost effective option.
Asset recovery and recycling go together like sales and profit; one tying directly to the other. There are other areas of recouping expense in a project, such the sale of equipment and fixtures, or land subdivision and sale, but recycling is the leading method, by far, in today’s market.
Some of the asset recovery and recycling materials that can be extracted during demolition or dismantling includes:
- Steel. This is prevalent in almost all commercial structures.
- Concrete. Also very common in huge quantities
- Copper wiring. Used throughout all structures and at an all time high.
- Wood. The after market for wood is high for reuse and creating by-products.
- Stone. Quality architectural and construction stone is in huge demand due to the high cost of production and transportation of materials.
- Aluminum. Scrap prices for aluminum are at an all time high. It comes from duct work, windows, railings, cable, gutters an many other places. Electrical feeder cables can weigh several pounds per foot.
- Asphalt. Most people do not realize that this has an after market.
- Lamp ballasts. A single multi story office building can contain hundreds per floor.
- Porcelain fixtures. All buildings have facilities containing these.
- Glass. Windows are the obvious source.
- PVC pipe. Used for both electrical and plumbing in every building.
Aside from these asset recovery and recycling materials, there are others that are less common but no less value, including architectural details such as decorative marble and granite, woodwork, light fixtures and more. Industrial furnishing is very hot in this area among designers. The possibilities are endless and there is savings to be realized in every project. The more you put back into circulation, the more return that you realize. It is that simple of a formula. Plus, it reduces waste and stress on natural resources.
We have been a leader in the reuse and repurposing of construction materials for years. Our projects in the area have included office buildings, industrial plants, public buildings, printing presses, schools, churches and more.
